Skiing Beginners Tips

Skiing is very popular right now. If you have never skiied and are preparing to go skiing for the first time, it may be helpful to read some skiing beginners tips. One tip you should follow is to choose a ski resort that offers lessons to beginners and has a good area for new skiers to practice on. Many resorts offer beginners classes for all ages from child to adult. Another important consideration when preparing to ski for the first time is your clothing and equipment. Before you can hit the mountain you will need to be properly outfitted with protective clothing and ski gear. There are lots of choices out there when it comes to ski wear and equipment.

Your ski suit is one of the things that you will need to sort out. It should be made from a waterproof material that keeps moisture and cold out while allowing your skin to breathe. Look for ski wear made with a PTFE membrane. PTFE stands for polytetrafluoro-ethylene and is a material used with polyester and/or nylon that provides breathable comfort while protecting against moisture. Another thing you'll need is hand protection in the form of gloves or mittens. Make sure they are waterproof, flexible and comfortable. A hat is essential for keeping your head and ears warm. You will also need sunglasses that provide 100 percent UV protection. To protect your skin, apply sunscreen before going out. Even if the weather is cold you can still get sunburned.

The next thing you will need to know about is how to use the the chairlift. There will be signs that tell you to keep your ski tips up and raise your chairlift bar. Your ski poles should be held high and you should observe the unloading area before reaching it to make sure there are no obstructions. Put your skis down on the landing platform and let them glide gently. Then simply raise off the chairlift and move forward. It is important to get out the way quickly so the next person to get off doesn't bump into you. Some resorts have conveyor belt lifts that require no skill to get on or off.

Another great tip for beginners is - be prepared to fall down. You will most likely fall down a lot while you are learning to ski. Keep your body relaxed yet controlled. When you fall, try your best to fall uphill rather than downhill. Use your hip and shoulder to absorb the force of the fall. Falling sideways rather than to the front or back is easier on the body. Also, make sure you choose a slope for your skill level. After you've mastered the easiest slope you are probably ready to move up to the next one. If you're taking classes your instructor will tell you which slopes are appropriate for your skill level.
